ACKART
1998-03-04 Gene Buck ebuck34@aol.com
Seeking information on the parents of Catherine Ann JOHNSON, b. 11 Oct 1847 in Caroga, Fulton Co.; parents identified as George and Sarah JOHNSON, but no further information, except that possibly George and Sarah were both born in Fulton County themselves. George and Sarah may have moved to Johnstown in about 1863. Catherine married James H. ACKART and d. in Gloversville, 9 Jun 1883. Strange bit of information in the 1880 census lists a "Sylvester LAKE" as Catherine Ann's "brother" Any help with Catherine's family would be much appreciated.
ALFORD
1998-04-25 Corrine R Sandberg crsandbe@sparc.isl.net
Looking for ELIAS family information. Primary ggrandfather was James Edward ELIAS b. Aug 10 1833 d. Dodge Co, Minn 1918. M. Martha Ann MORELAND after he arrived in Dodge Co, Minn about 1855. Dau of Wm or Wilson MORELAND and Ruth ALFORD, Ruth's parents were John and Ruth ALFORD. Not sure if Moreland family came through NY as Pennyslvania is mentioned. Martha,s parents: Wm or Wilson MORELAND with wife Ruth died in Dodge Co, Minn. Going back to James Edward ELIAS, his parents were Virginis ELIAS AND unknown mother both born Germany. An unidentified Christian ELIAS in same County, b. 1801 died Dodge Co 1878 and came from Ephratah, Fulton Co, NY, James Edward just says b. Fulton, NY but 1850 NY census says James ELIAS age 16, b. NY laborer with another family, page 181. James mentions Lasselsville, NY as does Christian's sons: Henry and William who were born Lassellsville, NY. Enough for now.
ALLEN
1998-07-09 Karla Huebner KarlaHuebner@compuserve.com
We are trying to locate information on David Van Ness' ancestor, Henry VAN NESS, and his wife Jane ALLEN. Their son George M. VAN NESS (b. 15 Jan 1804) lived in Broadalbin and married Sarah Olcott HAWLEY. George and Sarah moved to Michigan. Research in the old Fulton and Montgomery Co. histories indicates that Van Ness was a fairly common name in the Broadalbin/Northampton area in the 19th century, and presumably those Van Nesses were related to the elusive Henry. A Garret or Gerrit Van Ness is mentioned; does anyone know if he might have been Henry's father? We are sure someone must have more info than we do on this one!

ARGERSINGER
1998-06-13 Alan Robinson afrobinson@mkl.com
My gg-grandfather, Myron W. ROBINSON (1844-1907) married Marietta ARGERSINGER (1845-1922) in Johnstown, NY (Fulton County) where they lived and raised a family. I have yet to really research the Argersinger branch of my family, but I have noticed that there are very few Argersingers left in the area today (especially compared with multitude of Argersingers that populated the town in the 19th century). I do know that Marietta had at least one brother, Leonard ARGERSINGER. If anyone has information on the history of the Argersinger family, I would really appreciate a response to this query.

CLAYTON
1998-07-05 Bob Clayton Clayton@IBM.Net
My Great Granfather, Robert Wallace CLAYTON, lived in Stony Creek, Warren County, NY. for about 65 years (1850-1915). From abt.1850 he was married to Alrena TRIPP. Following Alrena's death in 1891, Robert married (2nd) a woman known to me only as Susan. For the years that followed, Susan worked as a saleslady in Robert's drug store in Stony Creek. Apparently Susan died around 1913-15. At that time, Robert moved to the farm of his son, Delbert Eugene CLAYTON, in Moreau County. He died in Clark's Corners, Moreau County in April of 1925.
I recently discovered a possible clue to the identity of Susan <unk> Clayton. In the NY State Archives vital records index of Marriages appears:
Robert N. Clayton 17 March 1892 Northville #4696.
An error in transcribing the "W" from the original record to an "N" in the index card could easily be made. Since the timing of this marriage fits so well with that projected from later census reports, I dare to hope that this is our grandfather. I would be delighted to learn more about Susan's earlier marriage(s) and 3 children.

COUGHNET
1998-07-10 Amy Christman amy_christman@hotmail.com
I am doing a research paper for a Parts-in-Government class on the Green Street Cemetery, funded by Johnstown. The entire class is doing this research paper and all of the finished documents will be compiled into one big book for tourists.
I am having difficulty in finding one of the Coughnets, Agnes. My
teacher and I have both looked and I have no other options, but to
consult you. Please offer any information on each of the following:
1. Elizabeth
2. Daniel
3. John Luke
4. John E.
5. Agnes
The only information I have been able to acquire on Agnes is from a gravestone stating that Agnes is Daniel's son. It is my understanding that Elizabeth was a very successful and wealthy woman which is highly unlikely for their time period. Could you confirm this info please and send all suggestions to me. All would be most helpful.

COYNE
1997-08-08 Paul William Fraser pwfraser@worldnet.att.net
FRASER, WALKER, MCNAB, STEWART, COYNE
Our genealogy includes not only FRASER, but many WALKER, MCNAB, MCPHERSON, STEWART, CARMICHAEL, MCEWEN, MCNAUGHTON (MACNAUGHTON), and ROBERTSON ancestors. Most of these ancestors emigrated from Perthshire, Scotland, more specifically the Earl of Breadalbane's former estate (also known as Lochtayside or the area surrounding Loch Tay).
Ancestor David WALKER was born in 1752 on a farm called "Donaphail" near the towns of Kenmore and Dull and emigrated aboard the ship "Commerce" in 1775. He arrived in Johnstown, New York (then Montgomery County, now Fulton County) shortly thereafter. David WALKER married Elizabeth WALKER, who had emigrated from Scotland aboard the same ship. David Walker and his son William WALKER (born 1779) owned farms in Perth and Broadalbin, NY. Other offspring of David and Elizabeth WALKER were Margaret WALKER, who married John MCNAB, Ann WALKER, who married Duncan CLARK, and Elisabeth WALKER, who married Alexander HAY.
NCNAB ancestors (offspring of Finlay MCNAB) were born at farms called "Edravinnoch" and "Blarliargan" near Killin. Son John MCNAB (born: 1769), who married Margaret WALKER (born about 1780), and grandson John MCNAB, Jr. (born: 1815) were prominent residents of Johnstown and Gloversville.
STEWART ancestors (John STEWART and father Donald STEWART) were also from Killin. John STEWART (born 1776) married Catherine MONTIETH (born: 1786)in 1810 in the Broadalbin/Johnstown area.
Our FRASER ancestor (William FRASER, Sr.) emigrated from the Badenoch region of Invernesshire, Scotland to Johnstown in 1807. William married Jennet DAVIDSON and had a son William FRASER Jr. in June 1808 in Johnstown. They then relocated to the village of York in Livingston County and later to Fowlerville and Caledonia.
The COYNE ancestors (Malachy COYNE) emigrated to Avon in Livingston County from Castlerea, County Roscommon, Irish Republic in the mid-1800s.
Most of these Scot ancestors emigrated to upstate New York (Johnstown, Broadalbin, Perth, Gloversville, Amsterdam, etc. in present day Fulton County) and many later moved to the Caledonia area in Livingston County, NY.
If any of this sounds familiar and you have any connection to our genealogy, we'd love to hear from you. Happy ancestor hunting,
Paul and Robert Fraser

FRASER

To whom it may concern, I am looking for any information about a man named James Willard GERMAIN. He was supposedly born in Gloversville in 1895 and died between 1922 and 1932. he was married to Myrtle BOOTH in 1913. He had 3 children they were born in 1918 to 1921. Two of the children died early in life and the third is still living. James and Myrtle went their separate ways in 1922. The only living child is Beatrice Germain and she knew very
little about the man who was her father. I need to verify if he was born in Gloversville and to find out his birth date as well as a death date and place of rest. The only piece of information I have is a newspaper clipping that has no dates anywhere or the name of the newspaper that printed the article. He was found hanging from a tree in a place called Seven Acres. The paper says that he committed suicide. I have written Albany and they have no record of his birth or death.
If anyone knows anything about this person please e-mail me at magellan@snowhill.com. I would be forever thankful.

My maternal grandmother was born Emma Augusta PRATT, the dau. of Joseph Fithian PRATT and Emma Jane GROSS. Emma Jane GROSS was born 18 Nov. 1831, NY; died 20 June 1903, LA. Because she died before LA began keeping death records, I have tried working through her known sister, Harriet GROSS. Harriet's death certificate stated that she was born 21 Dec. 1824 in Ephratah, Fulton Co., NY, a dau. of Thomas GROSS and Sarah GROSS (Whether Sarah's maiden name was also Gross I don't know). Harriet was a widow of Prof. Elias P. ST.JOHN when she entered a Masonic Home in Utica, Oneida Co., NY and lived there until she died 29 Apr. 1914. I am very anxious to learn anything I can about the Gross family of Fulton Co., NY. Family tradition says that Emma Jane & Harriet GROSS were orphans and that they worked in a glove factory.
Any help will be gratefully received.
