Purple Heart Medal

Mrs. Cora Miller, of 177 North Arlington avenue, has received the Purple Heart awarded by the War Department to her husband, PFC John T. Miller, of the Marine Corps, for wounds suffered in action in the Pacific area some months ago.  The medal arrived in the mail yesterday and was the first information of any sort received from him by his wife in some time.

PFC Miller was wounded in Saipan on June 20 when the Marines made their dash from ships to the beaches and then on into the interior against stiff Japanese opposition.  His wounds were to both legs.  He has been in htree hosiptials since for treatment

PFC Miller joined the Marines on August 3, 1942 and has been overseas since last December.

 

Family of John Truman Miller

John Truman Miller was the son of of Eugene David Miller and Florence Canfield.  Florence was the daughter of David Canfield and and Luella (Canfield).  In Eugene's old age, he was blind and lived on Bleecker Street in Gloversville, Fulton County NY.  

Eugene and Florence had a total of seven children, four of which were daughters:  Doris, Ethel, June and Bernice.

The following are their three sons, all of whom served in World War II:

1. Eugene David Miller, born February 21, 1920, Gloversville, Fulton Co., New York; 
Died April 2, 1991, Gloversville, Fulton Co. New York.

He married Bessie Dingman on October 7, 1939 in Gloversville, Fulton Co., NY.  She was the daughter of Walter Dingman and Bessie Morrison.

Eugene was a cook in the army during World War II. He was stationed in the U.S. but during the last days of the war was shipped overseas. When he was on the boat they announced that the war was over. Worked at the G. Levor Leather Mill for 26 years.

   

2. Harold Miller, born August 2, 1921, Gloversville, Fulton Co. New York; 
Died May 15, 1984, Gloversville, Fulton Co. New York.

He married Nellie Cartell, October14, 1942, Gloversville, Fulton Co., NY.  He worked for the City of Gloversville.

    

3. John Truman Miller, born April 3, 1923, Gloversville, Fulton Co. New York; 
Died November 16, 1994, Gloversville, Fulton Co. New York.

He married Cora Dingman on December 26, 1942 in Gloversville, Fulton Co., NY.  Cora was also the daughter of Walter Dingman and Bessie Morrison.

John was awarded the Purple Star for his wounds obtained in the battle of Saipan (see above).
